Opening Reception Feb 3rd 6:00pm-8:00pm

All are invited to attend – Geological Cake- a joint exhibition between the Burren College of Art and Gallery 126 featuring work by recipients of the Emerging Irish Artist Residency Award in September of 2016.

The opening reception at BCA will include a talk by geologist, Eamon Doyle, from Burren Geopark.

Geological Cake, constructs ersatz topographies, monuments, edifices and pseudo-geographies. In a fragmentary era where things, both tangible and technological, are fluid and in flux, the work attempts to document, reproduce and reference the Artist’s direct environs.

Utilizing discarded, quarried and invisible technological geographies the four artists visually explore historical, geological, psychological and gadgetry debris to construct ley lines in which to navigate a terrain saturated with stuff. Absorbed in the landscape are layers of anthropic intervention within this ancient gateaux.

The Emerging Irish Artist Residency Award is an annual award offered by the Burren College of Art in conjunction with artist-led gallery G126. Each year four emerging Irish artists are selected from an open submission and given the opportunity for a focused period of producing work during a one month residency at BCA. This group of artists then work collaboratively with G126 to produce a large scale show that takes place in both galleries at a later date. EIARA started in 2014 during the Burren College of Art’s 20 year celebrations, and was conceived as a way of discovering and supporting emerging talent in Ireland’s contemporary art scene.

Burren College of Art is an internationally recognised not-for-profit independent college specialising in undergraduate and graduate fine art education. BCA offers students time, space and inspiration within the unique environment of the Burren. The PhD and MFA programmes in Studio Art and Art & Ecology are accredited by NUI Galway and are operated in association with the Royal College of Art, London and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Annually, the college hosts faculty-led groups from international colleges and the undergraduate Study Abroad programmes, Summer School and Artist Residency programmes recruit internationally.

Alex Holzinger

Fiona Kelly

BCA Faculty Exhibition 2016
Burren College of Art Gallery

Ballyvaughan, Co. Clare.

October 6 – November 25, 2016

Opening Reception Thursday, October 6 from 6-8pm
FREE and open to ALL

Gallery hours:
Monday-Friday
9:30am-5:00pm

The Faculty at BCA are practicing artists and writers who exhibit, perform, publish and present in galleries, museums, festivals and at academic conferences all over the globe. They have individually won many national and international awards and collectively come together in this exhibition to represent a diversity of contemporary creative practice. As well as responding to major themes current in art, literature and critical theory, these works reflect the rural and peripheral context of the Burren and address the experience of life and the relationship to art from a tributary off the mainstream.

The works in this show have been selected to reflect the teaching focus of each participating artist. It is commonly understood that practicing artists teach art and demonstrate how to make art most effectively. As a way of life, being an artist is vocational and demands not only creativity, skill and acumen but adaptability, endurance and life-long commitment to a practice. Teaching requires similar capabilities alongside an engaged approach from educators who aim to accompany learners; care for and about them and bring learning into life. The purpose of this exhibition is to show the richness of creative educational practices the BCA Faculty engage with, to exhibit alongside our students in their studios and to bring the teaching of art to life.
