A mild start to the morning here in Ballyvaughan, and then a mist crept in around the bay to the village. Just one day before the winter solstice.
We’re not sure yet if there will be clear skies tomorrow morning – the date when the sun pours deep into the heart of the chamber at Newgrange in Co. Meath. But the optimists among us – who are not lucky enough to be there – can access a live streaming of the event. You’ll find the link here.
Winter is the time for hunkering down, meeting friends, and telling stories. Here’s a story from our part of the world, told by Ballyvaughan’s Jim Hyland. The film, a 7-minute animated documentary about the Irish War of Independence, was made by Sara Pocock. It was Winner of Best Animated Film at LA Femme Festival 2006.
Jim is a walking archive, and Ballyvaughan is lucky to have his knowledge of our history, and our stories.
